I thought it would be nice and interesting if we all tried to remember and write a little something about the first figures we got, and what got us interested in the Epoch(s) that we currently have an interest in.

So I'll start us off.

My first set was the Airfix Union infantry (Set 01712). I wanted them to have opponents, so I asked my dad to paint them up in different colors. This amounted to them getting different colors on the top of their heads. Later I got some Airfix Waterloo British Infantry (Set 01745).

The set that first got me back into 1/72 figures were the HaT figures from the Punic Wars. I marveled that it was now possible to have Carthaginians, something I thought would never have happened. I was hooked on Ancients. That is basically anything before the widespread usage of guns. It was fun to be collecting and painted figures once again.

Oh là là, mon premier set, c'était en 1968 (j'avais 11 ans), la boite N° 1730 "The Romans", puis vint logiquement la boite N° 1734 "Ancient Britons". Ces deux boites de chez Airfix, c'était à l'époque la seule marque disponible à Beauvais dans l'Oise. J'attendais fébrilement le catalogue en début d'année, Et Puis ensuite, j'attendais la sortie des boites en cours d'année. Je leur ai acheté tous leurs modèles. J'ai suivi Airfix jusqu'en 1982, et puis vers 1983 Il y a eu Esci . . . . . . . . . . Aujourd'hui à 66 ans je suis toujours fidèle à ces bouts de plastique, mais je n'achète plus toutes les boites (il y en a tellement) je me concentre sur l'antiquité et le 17e siècle. Plus éventuellement quelques boites de figurines que je trouve particulièrement réussies.

My First Set was Airfix German Afrika Korps in 1977
when i was 7 Years Old.

Irgendwann anfang der 1970er,das Robin Hood oder Fremdenlegion Spielset,genau kann ich es nicht mehr sagen,mit Festung und Figuren versteht sich.
Von Airfix hatte ich fast alles,auch die 1:32er Figuren,dann kam noch Matchbox und Atlantik,hatte ich auch vieles.
Gegen ende der 1980er sah ich die Figuren von Revell,Hastings und Rom und so fing alles wieder an

Oui effectivement.
Âgé de 55 ans .
Mes premières figurines : Airfix-matchbox-revell (soldats de la 2° guerre mondiale).
Reconstituant les grandes batailles du front Est sur la terrasse du jardin. Manquaient beaucoup de soldats soviétiques mais l'imagination comblait cette lacune.
Mais d'abord et surtout Atlantic: Egyptiens (fantassins- cour du Pharaon avec temple egyptien ) et Grecs avec notamment des navires de guerre (triremes ?).

My first 1:72 boxes for the ancients were from Atlantic (Greeks and Trojans), followed by Airfix with the Ancient Britons. At a certain point I also had to stop buying the Napoleonic, WWI, WWII, Western... for space reasons. Long live the toy soldiers🎨🖌️👍🏻

If I understand correctly, there were rules for playing with it (as a battle). Did they come with the box? If they did, were they any good?

Exactly as you said, rules, figures, dice, measures, bases, flags, etc.

And the second was:

Ok, so Marathon and Issus. Did you ever play with the rules?

I ask because I never did get those big box sets.

Yes I played and made up my own rules based on the pc game "total war" that I played with friends for many years. We accurately recreated great battles between Greeks and Persians or Romans and Carthaginians. Now I prefer to paint than to play.

That is a fun PC game. :) I have Total War Rome II.

I won't say I prefer to paint, but it seems that is mostly what I do ;)
