Here pics from my Late Roman heavy infantry (Comitatensis V Macedonica).
In the late Roman centuries the strength of the army shifted from infantry to cavalry. This was partly due to the size of the empire.
Legions on foot we’re to slow to adequately react to incursions from barbarian warbands crossing the borders of the empire.
Mobile cavalry units were better equipped to react swiftly to invasions on one or more borders of the Roman Empire.
However in fixed battles (heavy) infantry armies were vital to support and protect their cavalry units behind their shieldwall(s).
